Illustration Essentials
6 Week Class | Registration opens 2026-10-15 12:00 PM
Fashion illustration is the art of creating a world of style, character, personality, exaggeration, and imagination. Sitting at the intersection of fashion illustration, character design, and contemporary image-making, this playful and expressive studio course uses fashion as a dynamic tool for visual storytelling.
Students will experiment with exaggerating figures, distorting proportions, inventing imagined attire, and cutting up and rebuilding imagery through collage, painting, ink, and mixed media. Techniques like collage and textile work will be explored as methods for creative exploration rather than the main focus of the course. Through a series of expressive prompts and visual challenges, students will learn to communicate mood and narrative through pose, pattern, and composition, leading to the development of a bold, personal illustrative voice along the way. Students will also work from a live clothed model during one session, translating pose, garment folds, and figure dynamics into their own expressive illustrative style.
Note: This is not a fashion design course. This class uses fashion photography, editorial imagery, clothing, poses, typography, and textiles as launching pads for original illustrative artwork.
