Explore the beauty of birds and the natural world through the expressive and versatile medium of soft pastel. In this engaging course, you will learn to capture the character, colour, texture, and atmosphere of birds and nature while developing your confidence with pastel techniques.
Through demonstrations, guided exercises, and individual instruction, you will explore a variety of pastel approaches, including layering and blending colour, creating texture, building detail, and working with light and shadow. You will learn techniques for capturing feathers, foliage, branches, flowers, and other natural elements while discovering how to create depth and atmosphere in your artwork.
Working from photographs and nature-inspired imagery, you will experiment with composition, colour mixing, mark-making, and expressive pastel techniques to develop your own artistic style. Whether you are new to pastels or looking to expand your existing skills, this course offers a supportive and creative environment to explore, experiment, and bring your favourite birds and natural subjects to life.

Base Tuition: $300 + Material Fee: $25 = $325 Total

  • What You Will Learn:
    - Explore the unique qualities and versatility of pastel, including soft and hard pastels and different ways of applying them.
    - Learn how to layer, blend, and mix colours to create rich, luminous effects.
    - Develop techniques for capturing the texture and detail of feathers, fur, foliage, flowers, and natural surfaces.
    - Learn how to observe and simplify the shape, proportions, and structure of birds.
    - Experiment with mark-making and expressive techniques to add energy, movement, and personality to your work.
    - Learn how to create depth, atmosphere, and convincing backgrounds inspired by natural environments.
    - Explore composition and cropping to create engaging bird and nature studies.
    - Work from photographic references while learning how to interpret rather than simply copy your subject.

  • - Set of good quality soft pastels.
    - A few pan pastels including white, red, yellow and blue and application tools.
    - Faber Castell Pit pastel pencils (including white and black)
    - Sanded pastel paper (Pastelmat or UArt for example), 12x16”
    - Pad of Pastel Paper (various colours, for example Mi-Teintes 12x16”)

Tina Oehmsen-Clark

Tina's work has always been an exploration between various art forms, including sound, dance, installation, sculpture and drawing. She has exhibited in various galleries, museums and public spaces in Germany, Denmark and Canada. Since moving to Toronto in 1996, Oehmsen-Clark has worked on art projects at the AGO, Ryerson Student Gallery, Dancemakers and Wychwood Artscape. Besides her own art practice, she has taught in a number of schools and institutions including TSA. Tina always enjoys working with a wide age range, and believes that teaching art is an interactive learning process, both to inspire and be inspired.
