Cut & Construct 2: Mixed Media Collage

Cut & Construct 2 dives deep into the dynamic intersection of paint, texture, and paper. We’ll expand on traditional collage techniques, exploring how paint, colour choices, and deliberate composition can elevate your work into rich, multi-dimensional art. Each week, we’ll draw inspiration from contemporary mixed-media artists, dissecting their methods and experimenting with new processes. Through hands-on exercises, you’ll learn to seamlessly blend found imagery with acrylic paints and dry media, all while sharpening your eye for balance, color harmony, and contrast.
Notes:
- This course is a beginner to intermediate level course. You do not have to take Cut & Construct: The History and Art of Collage to take this course!
- There will be no class on Friday, October 16th.

- - Techniques for combining found imagery with paint and various dry media
- Strategies for using colour theory and texture to build expressive compositions
- Various ways to use collage as a tool for visual storytelling and experimentation
- How to develop your own unique collage style through playful exploration
- - Scissors and X-Acto knife with spare blades
- Small cutting mat
- Variety of papers and imagery (magazines, old books, photographs, coloured paper, photocopies, found ephemera, etc.)
- Glue stick
- Sketchbook or paper to apply collages
- Optional for collage coatings: Liquitex Matte Medium or Matte Mod Podge
Mixed Media Materials will be discussed on the first day of class.
Emily Joyce
Emily is a Toronto-based painter and paintings conservator. She specializes in the study of paint materials, from traditional egg tempera and oil paints to contemporary acrylics and mediums. The crossover of art and science in her profession has allowed her an in-depth exploration of the history and techniques of painters from a range of historical time periods such as the Renaissance, Impressionism and Pop Art. These studies have inspired her classes and workshops at the TSA. Emily has a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) with a minor in art History and a Master's of Art Conservation (Queen’s University), as well as a certificate in Traditional Materials, Methods of Painting and Restoration techniques through San Gemini Preservation Studies in Italy. Outside of the TSA, Emily works at Toronto Art Restoration in the west end, conserving a range of artworks from Tom Thomson landscapes to Michael Snow's Eaton Centre’s Geese.
