This course examines the forms and function of books, zines, editions, multiples and printed matter across various disciplines in contemporary art and the relationship between an artist book and the artistic process. We will look at of the development of the book as an idea and as an object from the 1960s onwards. Students will learn how to make, print and bind various types of softcover books: zines, accordion fold, pamphlet stitch, perfect binding and unique folded structures. We will examine a structured digital workflow in InDesign to edit, sequence and export books. And we will also address the ephemeral nature of other printed matter including pins, tote bags, prints, posters and objects that encompass ‘artist multiples.

No previous bookmaking experience is required.

Base Tuition: $505 + Material Fee: $30 = Total $535

  • What You Will Learn:

    To develop basic technical skills in bookmaking including design of structures/bindings and layout

    To create a digital workflow using InDesign (importing images, laying out text, exporting final pdfs)

    The history and provenance of artist books in contemporary art

    How to complete an artist book from concept development to editing, sequencing, layout, design, and making a physical photobook (aka dummy)

    To understand connection between form and content with the physical nature of books

Thalmann, Jessica
Jessica Thalmann

Jessica is an artist and educator currently based in Toronto and New York City. She received an MFA in Advanced Photographic Studies from ICP-Bard College and a BFA in Visual Arts from York University. Thalmann has taught at the International Centre for Photography, Akin Collective, MacLaren Art Centre, Toronto School of Art, Gallery 44 and City College of New York.  She has been an artist in residence at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Alberta, Canada, and at the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles, California, USA. She is a recipient of grants from the Toronto Arts Council, the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council. Her work has been shown in group exhibitions at Aperture Foundation, International Centre for Photography, Camera Club of New York Baxter St, and Humble Arts Foundation (New York), VIVO Media Arts Centre (Vancouver), Museum of Contemporary Art, Harbourfront Centre, Art Gallery of Mississauga, Varley Art Gallery of Markham, Angell Gallery, Gallery TPW, Art Spin, and Gales Gallery at York University (Toronto).
