Natural Colour on Textiles

Explore the vibrant world of natural dyes in this two-day introductory workshop. Learn the basics of this ancient practice while experimenting with both traditional dye materials and kitchen waste! Leave with your own dyed samples and the skills to continue exploring natural colour at home.
Base Tuition: $230 + Material Fee: $40 = $270 Total

- What You Will Learn:
- Practical skills in preparing fibres, creating dye baths, and achieving a range of colours and effects on textiles.
- Materials:
- Please bring a notebook or sketchbook for taking notes and recording samples
- Plastic bags/reusable shopping bags for taking home damp/wet fabrics
- Some fabric for samples and explorations will be provided but students should bring items to dye on the first day.- NO: synthetic fibres (polyester, nylon, blends)
- YES: natural fibres (cotton, linen, wool, silk)
- Undyed ie: white or natural (unbleached) works best
- Suggestions: t-shirt, tote bag, socks, bandana, pillow case
- Please limit to 3 items max. to ensure there is enough space in the dye pots for everyone. (please do not bring large or bulky items like dresses/bed sheets)

Guest Artist
Madi is a Toronto based fibre artist and educator. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and Visual Studies from the University of Victoria, and a Masters of Arts in Fashion Studies from Toronto Metropolitan University. She also holds a certificate in Fibre Arts from the Haliburton School of Art and Design. Her work explores sustainability and functionality through the lens of the historically feminised realm of craft and craft making. Her work in fibre challenges the boundaries that have historically confined craft to the periphery of fine art.
