High Park Plein-Air Painting

Spend a day painting outdoors at Toronto’s beautiful High Park. Designed for intermediate painters, this plein air workshop emphasizes capturing natural light, colour harmony and atmosphere in a dynamic outdoor setting. Through live demonstration and individual feedback, students will refine their technique and develop strategies for working efficiently on location.
High Park meeting spot will be shared with students via email prior to class.

- What You Will Learn:
- Introduction to techniques for composing and painting en plein air
- Strategies for simplifying complex landscapes
- How to capture changing light and colour in nature
- Tips for working efficiently outdoors with limited materials
- Please keep your receipts in case you need to return items.
- Portable easel, pochade box or some method of transporting/propping up your painting
- Oil or acrylic paints (titanium white, sap green, burnt umber, ultramarine blue, phthalo blue, cadmium yellow light/lemon yellow, yellow ochre,
cadmium red light, alizarin crimson)
- Canvas panels or boards (2, 8x10 or smaller, pre-toned with a wash of brown)
- Brushes and palette knife
- Solvent or water (depending on medium)
- Rags or paper towels
- Garbage bag
- Hat, sunscreen, water bottle and comfortable clothing for outdoor painting
- Optional: portable stool/chair or blanket to sit on
Emily Joyce
Emily is a Toronto-based painter and paintings conservator. She specializes in the study of paint materials, from traditional egg tempera and oil paints to contemporary acrylics and mediums. The crossover of art and science in her profession has allowed her an in-depth exploration of the history and techniques of painters from a range of historical time periods such as the Renaissance, Impressionism and Pop Art. These studies have inspired her classes and workshops at the TSA. Emily has a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) with a minor in art History and a Master's of Art Conservation (Queen’s University), as well as a certificate in Traditional Materials, Methods of Painting and Restoration techniques through San Gemini Preservation Studies in Italy. Outside of the TSA, Emily works at Toronto Art Restoration in the west end, conserving a range of artworks from Tom Thomson landscapes to Michael Snow's Eaton Centre’s Geese.
