Ceramics: Hands-On Throwing: Exploring Your Skills

This course is designed for beginner to intermediate students who have basic experience working with clay and want to improve their skills. Students will practice throwing on the wheel to create larger and more complex forms, as well as learn hand-building techniques such as slab and joining methods. We’ll also cover surface treatments: texturing, carving and glazing to enhance finished pieces. Instruction focuses on improving technique, building confidence and developing good studio practices while allowing time for independent work with instructor support.
Note: There will be no class on February 16th, due to the Family Day Holiday.
Base Tuition: $520 + Material Fee: $60 = $580 Total

- What You Will Learn:
- Master throwing techniques
- Refresh and refine foundational skills like centering, opening, pulling walls and shaping forms
- Learn how to properly use essential throwing tools to refine form and surface and explore how different tools can improve symmetry, surface finish and consistency
- Develop muscle memory & consistency for repeating forms and techniques
- Practice techniques for throwing taller cylinders and larger pots by using more clay, controlling wall thickness and improving pulls
- Explore & experiment with surface treatments, carving, slip decoration and using tools to create pattern and interest
- Understand the role of time (e.g. leather-hard stage) in decorating successfully
Valentina Guevara
Guest Artist
Valentina moved from Toluca, Mexico to Montreal, earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Concordia University in 2006. Her experience includes more than nine years dedicated to create handmade tiles for public art mosaics. This work enriched her artistic journey, through her intricate and vibrant ceramic works. Valentina teaches pottery, works as a studio technician, and dedicates time to personal projects. Her current body of work is an exploration of larger wheel thrown pieces and layered surface design techniques.
