Youth: Clay- Enchanted Animals & Dwellings

Step into a magical world where imagination takes shape in clay! In this creative course, young artists will explore the possibilities of hand-building, decorating and glazing with clay. From sculpting mythical creatures to designing fairy houses, forest huts, creature caves and more we will look at inspiring examples from folklore, fantasy art, and global traditions of animal and architectural symbolism along the way.
Students will work with clay, clay tools, underglazes and glazes, discovering how to bring their ideas to life in three dimensions.
Perfect for beginners and returning students alike, this course encourages creativity, craftsmanship, and confidence. At the end of the course, students will have a unique collection of magical clay creations to take home or exhibit.
For Youth aged 11-15

- What You Will Learn:
Foundational hand building ceramic techniques such as pinch, coil, slab construction.
Experiment with texture, pattern, and surface design using carving and glaze.
Use of various tools including cutters and plaster molds.
Develop storytelling through visual art inspired by folklore and fantasy.
Learn the safe handling of clay materials and tools.
Gain confidence in expressing ideas through clay.

The material fee includes 10 lbs of Cone 6 stoneware clay, all firings and use of glazes on site. Note: Additional bags of clay are available for purchase at TSA (note: all clay used at TSA, must be purchased from TSA).
A basic pottery tool kit like these from Tucker’s Pottery Supply in Markham or Above Ground Art Supply (several Toronto locations). TSA will stock a limited number of these kits for sale.

Tina Oehmsen-Clark
Tina's work has always been an exploration between various art forms, including sound, dance, installation, sculpture and drawing. She has exhibited in various galleries, museums and public spaces in Germany, Denmark and Canada. Since moving to Toronto in 1996, Oehmsen-Clark has worked on art projects at the AGO, Ryerson Student Gallery, Dancemakers and Wychwood Artscape. Besides her own art practice, she has taught in a number of schools and institutions including TSA. Tina always enjoys working with a wide age range, and believes that teaching art is an interactive learning process, both to inspire and be inspired.
