Painting the Winter Landscape

Embark on a creative journey through the serene and captivating world of winter landscapes. We will explore the techniques and colour palettes essential for capturing the unique beauty of winter scenes. Participants will discover the various painting methods tailored to depict the subtle hues and textures of snow-covered landscapes, frosty skies and the tranquil ambiance of the winter season. Through demonstrations and presentations, students will gain proficiency in using cool tones, creating depth and contrast and mastering the delicate interplay of light and shadow that defines winter settings.
Beyond the technical aspects, this course offers a rich historical and cultural perspective on winter landscape painting. Students will examine the evolution of this genre across different cultures, with a special focus on Canadian artists who have profoundly influenced the depiction of winter in art - from the hauntingly beautiful snowscapes of the Group of Seven to the serene depictions of indigenous winter traditions.

Leila Refahi
Leila is a visual artist, researcher, and educator working across painting, installation, and digital media. Her practice explores environmental issues such as climate change, ecological loss, and endangered species, with a strong focus on socially engaged and participatory art. Through her work, she is interested in how art can raise environmental awareness and contribute to shared knowledge within communities. Refahi has presented six solo exhibitions and participated in over 60 national and international group exhibitions and festivals.
