Portrait Drawing
10 Week Class | Available
This course introduces beginner and intermediate level students to the basics of drawing portraits from observation. Working with a variety of models, we will investigate the `landscape’ of the human head: the layout of faces and the particulars of facial features. We will look at ways to better reflect the proportions of individuals, and how to use value (light and shadow) to convey surface forms. A variety of art materials will be explored, including Conte crayon, charcoal and earth-tone chalks. Students will progress from short, fast poses at the beginning of the course to several extended poses at the end of the course. This will allow students to begin considering composition and to develop more fully resolved portrait drawings. Instruction will consist of short lectures, demo drawings, handouts and video clips and lots of in-class drawing time. Media will include graphite, charcoal and Conte crayon.
Recommended prerequisites: For best results, students should ideally have had at least one term of Introductory level drawing or equivalent experience.
Base Tuition: $495 + Model Fee: $120 = $615 Total

Thomas Hendry
Thomas is a Toronto-based artist, has been an instructor at the Toronto School of Art since 1996. Hendry has been active as an art instructor for over a decade, and he believes that learning art should be a positive discovery process. He practices this teaching philosophy beyond the Toronto School of Art at Sheridan College, The Haliburton School of Fine Arts, the AGO Gallery School, OCAD Outreach Program and the Toronto District School Board.
His drawings, shown in numerous exhibitions, use the means of traditional art to create contemporary images, images that address the beauty, mystery and complexity embodied in the human form.
