Fibre Arts: Silk Painting
3 Day Workshop | Registration opens 2025-07-03 12:00 PM
Designed for all levels, this set of three 5-hour classes will guide you through the basics of silk painting - from understanding traditional techniques to creating your own hand-painted scarf. You’ll work with professional-grade materials, explore the freedom and beauty of painting on silk, and create your own unique wearable silk art piece (a scarf, approximately 29"x 29").
This workshop is a relaxing and joyful way to connect with color, texture, and craft. No prior experience needed — just curiosity and a willingness to experiment.
Note that this workshop will take place on 3 Sundays: October 5, 19 & 26th.
Base Tuition: $282 + Material Fee: $75 = $357 Total

- What You Will Learn:
- Understand the basics of silk painting techniques and materials
- Use resist (gutta) to outline your design
- Apply silk dyes and create in watercolor-like technique
- Use salt to create visual effects
- Stretch delicate silk fabric using professional tools
- Iron-set your final artwork for long-lasting wearability
- Materials will be provided.
Optional:
- Gloves, palettes, aprons, paper towels
- Water bottle, lunch or snacks
Maria Shanina
Maria Shanina is a Toronto-based designer and artist whose delicate, contemporary textile works explore the intersection of aesthetics, emotion, and wellbeing. Captivated by the ancient art of silk painting, she creates delicate textile pieces that balance the fluidity of hand-applied dyes with the clarity of minimalist design. Her artistic practice is rooted in the belief that beauty and intentional craftsmanship can foster a sense of calm, connection, and well-being.Maria’s work has been exhibited in Canada and internationally, earning recognition for its sensitivity and innovation—most notably, her silk installation was awarded by DesignTO in 2024. Across media, she embraces impermanence and movement as core themes, using dynamic compositions to reflect the ever-changing nature of life. Through her art, Maria invites others to slow down, observe, and reconnect with the present moment.
