Painting Floral Layers: Transparency, Texture & Depth

This course guides students through a focused exploration of floral imagery, emphasizing the technical and expressive potential of layered painting. With an emphasis on transparency, texture, and depth, students will work with techniques such as glazing, wet-in-wet application, and varied brushwork to build richly detailed and luminous floral compositions. Through structured exercises and individual feedback, students will deepen their understanding of colour theory, value relationships, and the subtleties of floral structure. Special attention will be given to distinguishing between flowers observed in natural environments and those arranged indoors, considering both form and lighting.

Leila Refahi
Leila is an experienced art teacher and researcher with a demonstrated history of working in Visual Art. She has taught painting and drawing in different art schools and universities in Canada, Finland, Germany and Iran since 2011. Leila works with painting, installation and digital media to create participatory art experiences. Her work mainly focuses on environmental issues, climate change and endangered animals. She is interested in socially engaged art and its impact on raising and transforming environmental knowledge in communities. She has presented six solo exhibitions and participated in over 60 national & international group exhibitions and festivals.
