Ceramics: Hands-On Throwing: Exploring Your Skills

7 Week Class | Available

This course is designed for students with a foundational understanding of ceramics who wish to build upon their throwing skills. Students will refine basic techniques to gain confidence in throwing larger and more complex forms, such as taller vessels and combined pieces. With a focus on both technique and creativity, this class also explores a variety of surface design methods, allowing students to experiment and develop their individual artistic voice. The course encourages independence and gives students the space to perfect their skills while receiving guidance from the instructor.

Note:
- This class is not for the absolute beginner.
- There will be no class on August 4, due to the Civic Holiday.

Base Tuition: $405 + Material Fee: $55 = $460 Total

  • What You Will Learn:
    - Fine-tune basic throwing techniques, including centering, pulling walls, and creating larger forms with confidence
    - Learn to throw taller, more complex forms, and combine multiple pieces into unified designs
    - Experiment with advanced surface design techniques, including texture, carving, and glazing methods
    - Challenge students to produce multiple items of similar shape and size, improving consistency in their work
    - Develop a critical eye for evaluating design, form, and function in their pottery
    - Expand the use of tools and techniques for decoration, adding complexity to surface treatments

Valentina Guevara

Valentina moved from Toluca, Mexico to Montreal, earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Concordia University in 2006. Her experience includes more than nine years dedicated to create handmade tiles for public art mosaics. This work enriched her artistic journey, through her intricate and vibrant ceramic works. Valentina teaches pottery, works as a studio technician, and dedicates time to personal projects. Her current body of work is an exploration of larger wheel thrown pieces and layered surface design techniques.
