Ceramics: Throwing & Handbuilding

This course introduces the foundational techniques of working with clay, including hand-building methods like pinching, coiling, and slab construction, as well as an introduction to wheel throwing. For those with some experience in working with clay this course also offers an opportunity to expand their practice. Participants will learn to prepare and handle clay, explore surface decoration techniques such as underglaze application and texture treatments, and gain practical experience in the glazing process. With hands-on practice and guided instruction, students will create their own unique ceramic pieces while developing confidence in their creative abilities.
Base Tuition: $455 + Material Fee: $55 = $510 Total

Jon Packer
Jon is a graduate of the 3-D design degree program at Ravensbourne School of Art and Design (now Ravensbourne University) in London, UK with a Bachelor of Arts in ceramics. After graduation, Jon established a thriving clay studio in London, taught adult classes, and exhibited and produced commissioned work for home and retail. On relocating to Toronto, Jon has taught ceramics to youth and adults, exhibited in the city, curated an extensive exhibit of contemporary British ceramics and was invited to join the Board of Directors of the Ontario Crafts Council. Jon has pursued his own arts practice and continues to apply his teaching to help more students benefit from enjoying their own experience with clay. Jon was a long-time member of the Board of Directors of the Gardiner Museum in Toronto and provides public relations support to the Toronto School of Art.
