Collage Explorations 2: Bestiary: A Compendium of Beasts
9 Week Class | Available
This 2nd level Collage course is structured thematically. For the spring term, our theme is inspired by the idea of the Medieval Bestiary, and all its beauty and strangeness. This course is an exploration of animal imagery, symbolism and our relationship with animals and the natural world.
Through a wide range of mixed media collage and assemblage processes, we’ll explore topics such as: animals as fears and phobias, as a source of our love and devotion, as well as the anthropomorphism of animals in popular culture. We’ll investigate ideas around collecting and classifying animals in museums, aquariums and zoos, and the grave threat of habitat loss and disappearance of species. Throughout the course, we will enrich our art making by looking at both historical and contemporary artists who work with ideas around animal imagery.
Note: This course is best suited for people with collage experience.
Base Tuition: $432 + Material Fee: $20 = $452 Total

Donnely Smallwood
Donnely is a mixed media and installation artist. Using found imagery and text as a starting point, Smallwood transforms a wide range of disparate materials by cutting and rearranging. She is most interested in how collage processes, by isolating and transforming images, work to alter and intensify the reading of the material. Her collage and assemblage fragments come together to form book works, collage drawings and elaborate site-based installations.
