Drawing Animals for Beginners

This course will focus on introducing students to the basics of animal drawing. We will begin with an introduction into the structural forms of animals and how they are built. Moving forward, you will learn the concepts of gesture, contour, weight and introductory anatomy for a variety of different animals. Through our time together we will study: birds, cats, dogs, farm animals, primates, large herbivores, carnivores and what characteristics make each creature unique. We will also explore rendering techniques with water-soluble materials to illustrate mass, pattern, fur and feathers. Students will draw from a series of photos and video examples provided by the instructor in class and on Google Drive.
Base Tuition: $495 + Material Fee: $15 = $510 Total

- What You Will Learn:
- The basic construction of a variety of animals and how to simplify them
- To apply gesture, contour and weight to an animal drawing
- To use different materials and combine them in one drawing
- Please keep all purchase receipts in case items need to be returned.
- A mixed media sketchbook: 9x12” or larger
- Water-soluble graphite pencils
- A variety of different coloured water-soluble pencil crayons (minimum: red, yellow, blue, brown, yellow ochre, black)
- Kneadable eraser
- White eraser
- Empty water brush pen
Optional for experimenting: Assorted colours of oil pastels, markers and pencils
Lindsey Rosenow
Lindsey is a Toronto-based Artist who has been teaching in Toronto for the last 6 years.
She has taught film making, stop motion and classical animation, script writing, camera editing and video game design at the Toronto International Film Festival. And at the Animation Portfolio Workshop, topics included Gesture Drawing, Structure Drawing, Anatomy, Character Design, Perspective, Layout Design, Composition, Animation for beginners, and Storyboarding. Currently, Lindsey is working freelance with a focus on design jobs for animation as a layout artist and prop designer.
Lindsey is a big believer in progressive learning - she values transferable skills over singular assignments, making sure that all lessons work cohesively with one another.
