Collage Journals and Sketchbooks
11 Week Class | Available
This course explores the process of creating collage sketchbooks and journals using a wide range of collage and mixed media processes. It is an exploration of the relationship of image, text and personal narrative in the sketchbook form. Mixed media sketchbooks will be reconfigured through collage, drawing and ink processes. We will work with unusual collage papers as well as found images and text. The collage books and journals can work as a ‘sampler’ (a record of the course), for daily art practice or as a thematic exploration. We will transform a range of interesting imagery through elaborate cutting and reassembly. We will build meaning and complexity in our collage books, layering intricate collage cutouts and text with drawn, painted and stained papers and prepared grounds. Much of our explorations can be adapted for small studio practice.
Base Tuition: $495 + Material Fee: $20 = $515 Total

Donnely Smallwood
Donnely is a mixed media and installation artist and who has taught adults at the Toronto School of Art since 2001. Using found imagery and text as a starting point, Smallwood transforms a wide range of disparate materials by cutting and rearranging. She is most interested in how collage processes, by isolating and transforming images, work to alter and intensify the reading of the material. Her collage and assemblage fragments come together to form book works, collage drawings and elaborate site-based installations.
