Introduction to Figure Painting

This course is ideal for both beginner and experienced figure painters. New painters will learn the fundamentals of rendering the figure in paint, while experienced painters will be challenged and supported as they refine their art-making practice. Examination and discussion of colour theory, composition, painting techniques and the principles of observation and perception will be taught with a focus on students` personal goals and objectives. Model poses are generally two to three classes in duration.
Note: Oils will be the focus of this course and used for demonstrations and teaching purposes. Students wishing to use acrylics are welcome, please see Required Supplies below. It is recommended that students have taken a course in either Introduction to Painting or Introduction to Life Drawing.

Ian Baggley
Ian is a Toronto based classical portrait painter. His formal training was at the Toronto School of Art where he gravitated to figurative drawing and painting. Since then, Ian has immersed himself in the history and methods of the Old Masters to continue the tradition and mystery of the portrait. Ian’s teaching approach is to provide students with technical support and guidance to help foster the development of their own unique, individual style as an artist. His deeply honest and emotional portraits are found in collections across Canada, the United States and Europe.
