Classical Figure Painting

12 Week Class | This course is currently not open for registration.

Following a classical approach to painting, students will learn how to paint the figure accurately, working from a live model. We will look at the basic proportions of the human body and learn how to simplify the model into simple shapes and proportional landmarks. Emphasis will be placed upon making accurate measurements, mapping the body and establishing a strong structural construction. We will then observe how to create a sense of form by going over the various elements of light and shadow. Through black white and monochrome tonal studies, we will learn how to render the human body and give it a sense of 3 dimensionality. Finally, we will go over colour theory and learn to mix and match flesh tones and the various colours on the model. To guarantee the outcome of a successful work, the painting will be built in stages, starting with a drawing, followed by monochrome under-painting and then move to a full colour painting.

Note: This course is taught in acrylic paints but oils are welcome.
