This course is for beginners and those with experience who want to learn the fundamentals of Portrait Painting. The focus will be centred on the student's personal goals and objectives while capturing likeness, expression and the character of the model. Technical skills will centre on anatomy, proportion, colour theory, value and seeing light and shadow as form and shape. Various methods of painting portraits are covered, including the old master technique of underpainting and painting alla prima. Historical portraits are discussed and analyzed throughout the course. Model poses can be either one or two classes in duration.

Note: 
Oils will be the focus of this course and used for demonstrations and teaching purposes. For students wishing to use acrylics, please see required supplies below. For beginners, a limited palette will be used for the first class, more advanced students should bring all materials listed (see course material list link below).

    - The process of “blocking in” a painting and then refine with details
    - Painting techniques of scrumbling and glazing- Learn about composition
    - How to draw the human head and features- How to observe and measure to get proper proportions
    - How to create space and distance on a two-dimensional surface
    - How to train your eye to see form as shapes
    - Colour theory and knowledge of mixing flesh tones

Ian Baggley

Ian is a Toronto based classical portrait painter. His formal training was at the Toronto School of Art where he gravitated to figurative drawing and painting. Since then, Ian has immersed himself in the history and methods of the Old Masters to continue the tradition and mystery of the portrait. Ian’s teaching approach is to provide students with technical support and guidance to help foster the development of their own unique, individual style as an artist. His deeply honest and emotional portraits are found in collections across Canada, the United States and Europe.
