Portrait Painting 2 is designed as a continuation of Portrait Painting 1, where students will continue to develop skills and learn advanced ideas and techniques to professionally improve their portrait painting practice. The course will be structured with a combination of warm-up single sessions focusing on colour strategies, then moving on to more involved two and three-week sessions, culminating in a four week pose. Experimentation will be encouraged. Throughout the course, both historical and contemporary methods for portraiture and composition will be discussed as well as appropriate lighting of subjects and strategies for working from photos. Students will be  supported on an individual basis as they pursue their own ideas and interests. All sessions are with live models.

Notes: 

  • It is recommended that students have taken Portrait Painting 1 or its equivalent.

  • Oil paints will be the focus of this course and used for demonstrations and teaching purposes.

Baggley, Ian
Ian Baggley

Ian is a Toronto based classical portrait painter. His formal training was at the Toronto School of Art where he gravitated to figurative drawing and painting. Since then, Ian has immersed himself in the history and methods of the Old Masters to continue the tradition and mystery of the portrait. Ian’s teaching approach is to provide students with technical support and guidance to help foster the development of their own unique, individual style as an artist. His deeply honest and emotional portraits are found in collections across Canada, the United States and Europe.

- Awarded the Barbara Barrett and the Matthew David Stein Scholarships
- Taught at Waterfront Trail Artists, Lello Art School, ArtWorks Art School, and Neilson Park Creative Centre
