Introduction to Life Drawing

6 Week Class | This course is completed

For many, the process of representing a human body is a challenge. When regarding another human being, we must reconcile a wealth of information with a host of preconceptions, emotional responses, and built-in perceptual 'short-cuts'. This course will guide the participants through a contemporary/classic approach to drawing the human figure, touching on the foundations of the drawing process: gestural study, measurement and proportion, contour and mass drawing, and some consideration of light and tone and relevant anatomical structures.

Instruction consists of drawing from the model, supplemented by short lectures, demonstrations and handouts. Relevant historical and contemporary artists will be introduced as well. While our focus in this class will mostly be the undressed bodies of people, the exercises & processes used can apply with equal relevance to most other observational drawing situations. Primary emphasis is on the overall figure. Detailed areas such as hands and faces are reviewed, but not in depth.

Base Tuition: $318 + Model Fee: $70 = $388Total

Thomas is a Toronto-based artist, has been an instructor at the Toronto School of Art since 1996. Hendry has been active as an art instructor for over a decade, and he believes that learning art should be a positive discovery process. He practices this teaching philosophy beyond the Toronto School of Art at Sheridan College, The Haliburton School of Fine Arts, the AGO Gallery School, OCAD Outreach Program and the Toronto District School Board. His drawings, shown in numerous exhibitions, use the means of traditional art to create contemporary images, images that address the beauty, mystery and complexity embodied in the human form. 1996 BA (Honours), University of Guelph 1994 Diploma (Honours), Ontario College of Art 1983 Arts; Sake Inc.
