This introductory online course explores the field and function of still life photography. We cover its historical and conceptual development in painting, and then study a wide range of photo-based artists, including Jan Groover, Awol Erizku, Laura Letinsky, Leslie Hewitt, Willa Nasatir, David Goldes, and others. Weekly assignments, lectures and readings guide students through various approaches to the genre, using recurring conventions, motifs, props, objects, backgrounds, lighting styles and arrangements. Students will spend time creating their own tabletop still life scenarios and focusing on challenging themselves aesthetically and conceptually; to examine their relationship to the objects and the world around them.
