Introduction to Tapestry Frame Loom Weaving

In this 4 week course, students will learn how to set up a warp, hand weave, and finish a tapestry on a frame loom. Students will be introduced to weaving terminology, how to construct a warp and shed on a frame, weaving techniques of plain weave, shape building with slit tapestry, hatching, and knotting. In addition, you will receive instruction on how to design a cartoon, how to cut your weaving off your loom and finishing techniques.

Each student will complete one tapestry sampler and one final tapestry.

Stephanie is a Toronto based artist who uses textile techniques of natural dyeing, weaving, piecing, clamping, wrapping and stitching to explore various ideas around process and colour creating both functional and non-functional work in art, craft and design. Stephanie trained in interpretive illustration at Sheridan College and completed an interdisciplinary BFA with a focus in textiles and art history at NSCAD University. Fortin held a full time artist-in-residence position at Harbourfront Centre (Toronto, ON) and Akin + Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto (MOCA). She was also a member of The Contemporary Textile Studio Coop (Toronto, ON). Fortin has exhibited work in Canada, The United States and China. She currently lives and works in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
