In this 8 week course, students will learn how to paint the portrait accurately, working from the life model. We will look at the basic proportions of the face and head structure and learn how to simplify the model’s head into simple shapes and proportional landmarks. Emphasis will be placed upon making accurate measurement, mapping the features at their proper place and establishing a strong structural construction of the head.
We will then observe how to create a sense of form by going over the various elements of light & shadow. Through black & white and monochrome tonal studies, we will learn how to render and give the facial features a sense of 3 dimensionality.
Finally, we will go over colour theory and learn to mix and match colours on the model. To guarantee the outcome of a successful work, the painting will be built in stages, starting with a drawing, followed by monochrome under-painting and then move to a full colour painting.
This course is taught in Acrylic but Oils are welcome.
