In this ONLINE course, students will focus on process and experiment with mark-making, layering, colour control and some modification strategies. We will explore the fundamentals of tone and colour with a focus on the relationship between what we see and what we make. We will examine colour, hues, tones etc. and how these elements relate to form a composition.
Using styles of specific artists to help set the stage to connect with abstract art, students will work with a range of approaches designed to unlock greater fluency and more forthright decisions about transposing realism to abstraction. The work will be gestural, geometric, figurative and landscape based with emphasis on rhythm, contrast and spontaneity, and learning how to increase a sense of depth and space in a single artwork. Modern Art History will be used as reference, specifically Abstract Expressionism in relation to German Expressionism. This course will also reference Minimalism and Contemporary Art trends today in both North America and Europe with a focus on British Art.
By the end of this course, students will have created a number of paintings on paper which explore different concepts of abstract art towards building their personal style. All the lessons learned during the course can be applied to all art-making genres.
This course is intended for intermediate levels in abstract painting including those who have taken Abstract Painting 1.
