Get your creative energy flowing in this ONLINE introductory 4 session workshop.

Dive into the world of surface design by learning how to develop your ideas and designs by hand into repeat patterns that can be printed on textiles, used in fashion, design, art, fine craft and more. This workshop will lead students in how to initiate creative ideas, understand design development & principles, colour theory and how to set up a repeating pattern by hand for surface design applications.

The class will run for four half days, over two weeks:

Wednesday, August 18 & Thursday, August 19, 12:00 - 3:00 p.m. 

Wednesday, August 25 & Thursday, August 26, 12:00- 3:00 p.m.

  • What You Will Learn:
  • Be able to identify and describe the ideation to creation design process 
  • Describe fundamental principles of design and colour theory 
  • Manipulate a 2D material into a 3D form and object 
  • Create elements that will become part of a pattern 
  • Create a single tile for a repeat pattern and put it into repetition on a larger scale Engage in critique process constructively and collaborativey.

Stephanie is a Toronto based artist who uses textile techniques of natural dyeing, weaving, piecing, clamping, wrapping and stitching to explore various ideas around process and colour creating both functional and non-functional work in art, craft and design. Stephanie trained in interpretive illustration at Sheridan College and completed an interdisciplinary BFA with a focus in textiles and art history at NSCAD University. Fortin held a full time artist-in-residence position at Harbourfront Centre (Toronto, ON) and Akin + Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto (MOCA). She was also a member of The Contemporary Textile Studio Coop (Toronto, ON). Fortin has exhibited work in Canada, The United States and China. She currently lives and works in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
