Writing, Blogging, Vlogging and YouTube – Can it add to Your Cruising Life?

After more than 50 years of successfully funding her cruising through writing, blogging, video making and publishing her own books and those by other sailing authors, Lin has learned what nautical viewers and readers want to know. She will share ways to ensure your video footage, photos and diagrams attract attention. Just as important, Lin will discuss ways to ensure your audience feels fully engaged and keeps returning to your stories.
Whether building an online audience or looking to fund your cruising by writing, a major key is selling articles to online and print magazines. Lin will share some of the tricks she has used to get noticed by editors and bloggers who are key to spreading your words. A section on book creation and publishing will include the realities of self-publishing vs traditional publishing.
Guest speakers, including Herb Benavent – of The Rigging Doctor and John the sailor man of Sailing Triteia will come along to add nuts and bolts information on YouTubing.
Included in the program is an overview of the investment in time and emotion, the financial return and pleasures you can expect along with the pitfalls and the practicalities of becoming a sailing storyteller.
Lin Pardey
Lin has accrued more than 217,000 sea miles sailing on boats ranging from 24 feet to more than 60. A major portion of these voyages were on board two engine-free wooden cutters she and her husband Larry built. On Seraffyn, a 24’4” Hess cutter, they circumnavigated, east about, via the Panama and Suez Canals with many detours and going as far north as the Arctic circle of Finland. On Taleisin, their 29’ Hess cutter, they circumnavigated west about, venturing as far north as the top of Norway, and as far south as Diego Ramirez Island in Drakes Passage to the south of Cape Horn. This circumnavigation included sailing against the wind past each of the great southern capes. Together, Lin and Larry wrote 10 books and created 5 video programs. Lin authored two additional books. These, along with seminars and articles “launched 50,000 dreams,” according to the editor of Cruising World Magazine.
After 47 years of voyaging, Lin settled in at her homebase in New Zealand to care for Larry through his decline due to Parkinson’s disease and dementia. In 2018 Lin became crew on David Haigh’s 40-foot Van de Stadt, Sahula just before he completed an 11-year circumnavigation. Over the past five years Lin and David circumnavigated New Zealand and explored Fiordland, then voyaged from New Zealand through Fiji and Vanuatu and on to Townsville, Australia where he completed his circumnavigation. They then headed south to explore the Bass Straits and west coast of Tasmania. When covid curtailed their voyaging options, the decision was made to sail backn to Lin’s home on Kawa
