Hands-On Offshore Route Planning - Norfolk to Bahamas
Elective Class | Available
This course provides a methodology and plenty of hands-on practice with offshore route planning, applicable to short or long ocean passages. We’ll blend climatology, basic navigation and marine weather resources to plan an offshore route from Norfolk VA to the Great Abaco, Bahamas. You’ll use a planning chart, navigation tools, and archived weather & ocean current data from multiple sources to help you plan and make informed decisions about timing and route shaping for a safe, enjoyable passage.
This seminar is the perfect hands-on practical complement to the foundational theory learned in Navigation and Weather Planning for Passagemakers, but requires only a basic knowledge of marine weather.
Lisa is a retired Navy navigator, meteorologist and oceanographer, and brings those skills into play for practical passage planning. Lisa & Andy have made numerous offshore passages on their own sailboats, and instructional passages on clients’ boats. They are the primary contributing writers of ASA’s Advanced Cruising & Seamanship textbook.
