Developing Effective Leadership at Sea - Own the Role
Elective Class | Available
The number one reason for disasters at sea is not a lack of skill — it is a lack of leadership and communication. And leadership does not mean knowing everything or being the boss! This course is designed by two USCG licensed captains with years of experience captaining commercial vessels. A successful captain will facilitate a safe voyage where everyone will have fun, feel like they were a valuable asset to the voyage, and learn something. They recognize that emotional safety is equally as important as physical safety. That’s a tall task for one person. Plus, a great captain never needs to shout! This seminar will show you tips for facilitating an inclusive shipboard culture. This seminar is also great for couples who sail together but feel that being underway puts a strain on their relationship. We’ll discuss how to blend roles on a boat so that every sailor (even the rookie) feels empowered to take the helm, manage the vessel, and find fulfillment in ways they never thought about. Finally, we’ll use stories of true disasters at sea to analyze what problems they have in common and how to recognize in advance that things are going to unravel.
