Horizontal stripe pick-up is a versatile technique that offers countless ways to add pattern and personality to an inkle band. Every warp thread has the potential to become a pattern thread, making this warp ideal for creating a wide range of designs, from bold geometric shapes and lettering to diamonds or curves. In this workshop, participants will practice weaving a variety of pick-up techniques, including single, double, alternating, and block pick-up. Students will learn how to read horizontal stripe pattern drafts and experiment with designing simple patterns of their own. In addition, Runic pick-up and rep weave will be introduced and discussed, expanding students’ understanding of how these related techniques can be incorporated into future work. The class will culminate in weaving a sampler band that showcases multiple techniques and motifs, providing students with both a valuable reference piece and a springboard for continued exploration and design.
