Fibre Arts: Fundamentals and Techniques

In this course, students will have the opportunity to explore a variety of materials and techniques in fibre arts. Students will learn basic natural dye technique and fabric painting to create patterns, and slow stitching for mindful composition using applique and embroidery. With a focus on sustainability, students create stitched, printed, dyed and sewn artwork and functional items.
This course is designed to be inclusive and welcoming to students of all skill levels and backgrounds. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned maker, there’s something for everyone to learn and enjoy.
Base Tuition: $333 + Material Fee: $25 = $358 Total

- What You Will Learn:
- A brief history of fibre arts and artists
- Properties of natural vs.synthetic fibres and how to identify them
- Approaches to upcycling and reclaiming fibre/textile
- Natural dye basics
- Slow stitching techniques such as embroidery and applique
- - Basic Sewing Kit: Needles (embroidery, hand sewing, tapestry), scissors, pins, seam ripper
- Embroidery hoop
- Embroidery floss & other threads (cotton, silk, sashiko etc.)
- Fabric remnants and scraps if you have them
- Whatever else might be in your collection that you are interested in using!

Guest Artist
Madi is a Toronto based fibre artist and educator. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and Visual Studies from the University of Victoria, and a Masters of Arts in Fashion Studies from Toronto Metropolitan University. She also holds a certificate in Fibre Arts from the Haliburton School of Art and Design. Her work explores sustainability and functionality through the lens of the historically feminised realm of craft and craft making. Her work in fibre challenges the boundaries that have historically confined craft to the periphery of fine art.
