Illustration Essentials
10 Week Class | FULL
Illustration is an evocative form of visual communication. In this studio course, students will examine a wide range of creative approaches that give visual form to abstract concepts and ideas. Emphasis will be placed on the development of concepts, sketching, brainstorming, matching form to content, non-literal thinking, and risk-taking. Students will be introduced to the fundamental theories and practices in illustration, exploring editorial illustration, magazine layouts, sequential art, and more. Work will be executed in a variety of media, including traditional media (gouache, water-based paint, coloured pencil, pen, and ink), collage, and digital media (if you have one: Procreate on iPads, Photoshop in the Digital Lab), as well as a combination of both.
Note: Students are encouraged to work with the media that best compliments their own illustration art-making practice. Materials will be discussed in each class.
Base Tuition: $480 + Material Fee: $10 = $490 Total

These learning outcomes will provide students with a comprehensive basic understanding and practical skill set in contemporary illustration, preparing them for future study and various applications in the field.
Karen Justl
Karen is a visual artist, illustrator, graphic designer and educator whose work has appeared in galleries in Winnipeg and Toronto, indie films and print publications including at the Sundance Film Festival, TIFF, HOT DOCS and the Winnipeg International Writer's Festival. Her work was featured in the Fantagraphics show Misfit Lit, and her series People and Their Problems won an illustration prize and appeared in Applied Arts magazine. She gained wide acclaim for her 'Cougar' cover for Herizons Magazine and illustrations for Pilot Pocketbook Project and was awarded the Herman Miller Prize at the Toronto Offset Design Festival for her 'NOIR' installation at the Toronto School of Art, among other accomplishments.
Karen holds a Master of Design from the Ontario College of Art and Design University and a BFA Honours from the University of Manitoba. She teaches at OCAD University in the Faculty of Design, and has taught at the University of Manitoba, Ryerson University's Chang School and Toronto School of Art.
