Autobiographical Painting: Objects & Spaces

12 Week Class | FULL

This is an intermediate level painting class in which students will develop a body of work reflecting their personal life, experience and histories through the objects and spaces that surround them. Through exercises, we will look at the possibilities of ‘self portraiture’ beyond the face and body - using sources from life, photographic references and memory to explore the meaning behind personal objects and the spaces that define them (while working to develop their painting vocabulary and personal expression). There will be a focus on painting fundamentals and observational painting, as well as newer methodologies, for example, the incorporation and reinterpretation of found and archival imagery, such as old photographs. The class will discuss the historic and contemporary lens of still life, landscape and interiors as painting subjects: the ways they can be utilized to explore identity and self; and the ways that objects and spaces can and have been built in an engaging autobiographical body of work. This course will emphasize painting time while incorporating lectures, demonstrations and critiques.

Base Tuition: $540 + Material Fee: $10 = $550 Total
